Our experience in all modes of transportation allows us to bring a unique perspective to transit projects. We understand that in order for transit to be effective, it must be closely integrated with other critical elements including land use, the roadway system, and the adjacent network of bicycle and pedestrian facilities.

We specialize in transit planning for municipalities, cities, provinces, and other urban areas across Canada. Using a data-driven approach, we have experience in helping many areas start new transit services or achieve improvements in existing services. At Trans-Plan, we apply cost-effective and time-sensitive design, maximize our client’s asset value & market penetration, all while minimizing the consumption of land and other capital resources. We assist in the achievement of financial, functional and aesthetic objectives through the integration of urban design, economic development and transportation demand management. Our goal is to develop optimum operating efficiency, traffic access and circulation within every project we oversee.

The main purpose of a Traffic Impact Study (TIS) is to assess the potential impact of traffic generated by a proposed development or redevelopment and to identify the roadway improvements required to ensure that the road network will operate safely and efficiently upon completion of the development.

A TIS also identifies on-site and off-site improvements that might be needed as a result of the development and it plays an important role in the development review and approval process. Many local governments have established guidelines and policies that govern their site development and review process. Usually the requirement to perform a Traffic Impact Study is based on number of trips generated by the site, type and size of the development, and other area characteristics.

A TIS should be prepared under the supervision of a qualified and experienced transportation professional who has specific training in traffic and transportation engineering and planning. In addition, all transportation operations and design work stipulated in the TIS recommendations should be completed under the supervision of a qualified and experienced professional engineer in conformance with province and local professional requirements.

Traffic impact study services is one of our main services at Trans-Plan. We possess analytical tools and databases to assist in resolving transportation matters to the satisfaction of both our clients and the reviewing agencies. We develop analytical techniques and physical design solutions to solve issues of off-site impact, site access requirements and intersection optimization. Through the information collected, Trans-Plan implements the necessary knowledge to improve the optimization of specific sites and intersections. Trans-Plan provides effective public presentations and expert testimony as required, and has the expertise in the planning approval process in most jurisdictions.

Services include:

  • Traffic trip generation and distribution pattern

  • Preliminary site assessment

  • Transportation capacity assessment

  • Site access location, design and implications for off-site improvements

  • Site access operations and traffic signal warrants

  • Intersection capacity analysis

  • Representation at public meetings, and municipal approval process statutory meetings
